Taos is a beautiful area located within the “Land of Enchantment” that is New Mexico. While the whole state is pretty incredible, this area offers travelers so many activities that you could easily stay here for weeks. 1. RAFT ON THE RIO GRANDE

You’ll find the Rio Grande River on the western side of Taos, with many access points available for viewing and exploring. While you can enjoy this river in many ways, the best option is to take a guided rafting trip. These tours are suitable for beginners, have incredible views of the canyon, and even include time for swimming. It’s a unique way to explore a beautiful area and you’ll gain a local’s perspective of the Taos area as well.

2. EXPLORE THE TAOS SKI VALLEY

Lovely in both the summer and the winter, this outdoor area is only about 30 minutes from downtown Taos. While certainly quieter in the summer, you can still find plenty to do around here including scenic lift rides, hiking, mountain biking and picnic areas. You can also stay in the ski valley (even in the summer) at the charming and cozy Blake Lodge, which offers shopping and restaurants as well.

If you enjoy hiking, be sure to check out the best trail in the area, which is Williams Lake. This trail is a moderate 3.7 mile hike that ends a gorgeous alpine lake. Afterwards, on the way back down, stop at the Bavarian Lodge to grab a bite to eat. The alpine atmosphere here will make you feel like you are in another country. Summer hours are limited, so check to see when they are open before visiting.

3. ENJOY THE ARTISTAN COMMUNITY OF ARROYO SECO

If you are visiting the Taos Ski Valley, then you’ll probably drive through the lovely area of Arroyo Seco. Only 15 minutes from downtown Taos, this tiny town has several local artisan shops and delicious restaurants, including the famous Taos Cow. This outdoor food cart is located on a quiet stream surrounded by willow trees, which makes it a great spot to enjoy a coffee or ice cream. After your coffee break, wander around the mural filled streets to look at local artwork and pottery.

4. WALK ACROSS THE RIO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE

This 650 foot high scenic bridge, which is 25 minutes from Taos, is the 5th highest in the United States. There are lookout points on both sides of the bridge or if you are brave, you can also walk across it. It’s a terrifying walk, but worth it for the views of the canyon below. You may even spot some bighorn sheep along the side as well!

5. LEARN ABOUT EARTHSHIPS

Located about 20 minutes from downtown Taos, you can combine your visit to the Earthship community with a visit to the Rio Grande Bridge. This “off the grid” sustainable neighborhood is a one of a kind spot in the US. Stop by the visitor center to learn about the community, which offers self guided and also private tours. You can also book nightly rentals at some of the Earthships, which are found on their website.

At the visitor center, you’ll learn about the unique and sustainable ways the homes are designed (with recycled materials!) While most of the neighborhood roads are private, you can see many of the homes from the drive on Highway 64.

6. SOAK IN A HOT SPRING

There are several hot springs located within an hour drive of Taos. Ojo Caliente is an upscale hot spring that is also a resort and spa. While this option is a luxury one, it is a beautiful spot that has many thermal pool options, a sauna and also a steam room.

For a more peaceful and natural setting (and free), visit the incredible Black Rock Hot Springs. These magical springs are located about 25 minutes from Taos. It’s also close to the John Dunn Bridge, which is a great spot to camp and swim in the summer.

  • To get to these springs, park by the John Dunn bridge and follow the footpath along the west side of the river. There is no signage here but look for the well trafficked trail and you’ll end at the springs.

7. GO ON A SCENIC DRIVE

Taos is a great base for several stunning scenic drives. These include:

  • High Road To Taos – This scenic highway takes you between Taos and Santa Fe (but not on the main highway route!)
  • Scenic Drive to Red River – Drive north along highway 522 to turn east at highway 38 and end at the cute community of Red River.
  • Taos Ski Valley Drive – If you visit the ski area, you’ll drive along the only road that takes you through this beautiful valley. There are many hiking trails, riverside picnic spots/campsites and you’ll also pass through Arroyo Seco!
