Did you know that Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) is the 4th most visited national park in the USA? While most people visit in the summer and fall, winter is also a great time to explore this area. During this season, the snow transforms the park into a winter wonderland. There are also many hiking trails still accessible, with the stunning Sky Pond Trail being one of the best. Here is your detailed guide to the most beautiful winter hike in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Sky Pond
SKY POND TRAIL DETAILS
- This hiking trail is located within Rocky Mountain National Park. In order to hike here, you must purchase a day pass to the park, which is $30, or an annual National Park Pass, which is $80. In the summer, you need reservations to access the park, however, in the winter, it’s not necessary. Stay in nearby Estes Park the night before or after for better access.
- The hike to Sky Pond Lake begins at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. The trailhead lot, located about 30 minutes from Estes Park, fills up quickly so plan to arrive early. If this parking lot is full, you can also park at the Bear Lake parking, which is 5 minutes further down the road. The Sky Pond Trail is also easily accessible from this parking area.
- We recommend getting to the trailhead by 9 AM on weekdays or 8 AM on weekends. Getting an early start is beneficial not only for parking, but also for the unpredictable Colorado weather and frequent snow storms.
- This hike is a very well trafficked 8.6 mile out and back. It takes roughly 5 hours to complete, with around 1,700 feet of elevation gain. You’ll find signs posted several times throughout the hike, but it’s useful to have the AllTrails map downloaded as well.
- Snow conditions vary based on weather, so you will certainly need waterproof boots and clothing. Depending upon the conditions, you should have either microspikes for icy packed snow or snowshoes for deeper fresh snow.
HIKE HIGHLIGHTS
- Winding past dramatic rock walls, solid ice waterfalls, and 3 frozen lakes, this hike has an incredible diversity of scenery. The first beautiful stop is only 3/4 of a mile in, which is Alberta Falls. Almost entirely frozen in the winter, this waterfall is a spectacular start to your hike.
- Another 1.5 miles into the hike brings you to Loch Lake. The hike normally runs around the right side of this lake, however, during the winter it is completely frozen over. The frozen wind blown water creates exquisite textures and shapes, so be sure to notice this as you cross!
- Be sure that the lake is actually frozen before crossing and tread carefully, as the ice is very slick!
- If you don’t want to go all the way to Sky Pond, this lake is a great stopping point with just as beautiful views.
- On the final stretch of the trail, you’ll pass Lake of Glass, which is connected to Sky Pond via a steep waterfall section. This section can also be slick so use caution as you climb up beside the frozen Timberline Falls. While you don’t actually have to climb on the falls, the section next to it is the trickiest of the hike.
- After climbing beside Timberline Falls, you’ll hike only a little further to find yourself at Sky Pond. With rocky peaks and sweeping vista views below, you’ll find that this hike was definitely worth the effort.
WHERE TO STAY IN ESTES PARK
- The town of Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Apart from the casual elk herds roaming around, this city has a very charming downtown and comfortable lodging options.
- Estes Park is home to the famous Stanley Hotel, which is known for being the inspiration for Stephen King’s The Shining. A grand play to stay, it offers romantic dinners, a well appointed cocktail bar, and also historical tours.
- For a less expensive option, but no less cozy, try the Historic Crags Lodge. It’s centrally located, has amazing rustic decor, and an incredible outdoor hot tub (perfect for snowy winter days!)
