The Most Beautiful Places for Fall Foliage in Colorado

For a brief period each fall, the Colorado Rockies are transformed into a stunning array of golden tones. This fantastic display of color is attributable to the Aspen trees that cover a remarkable 5 million acres of this state. While there are many gorgeous areas in Colorado to “leaf peep”, here are the most beautiful places for fall foliage in Colorado!

Tom Blake Trail, Snowmass

Aspen, aptly named after the abundance of Aspen trees in the area, is the best place in Colorado for fall foliage. The Aspen tree dominates the mountains in this area, so you’ll find gorgeous views everywhere you look.

  • Visit the Maroon Bells, which is the most photographed place in Colorado. This famous spot has a brilliant display of fall colors, ranging from gold to red to orange.
  • The Tom Blake Trail, near Snowmass, is a great trail with many beautiful Aspen trees. While the entire loop is 5 miles, you only have to walk a bit to enjoy the scenery.
  • The Upper Hunter Creek Trail is located right in downtown Aspen. From this trail, you’ll find many beautiful viewpoints looking out over the town.
  • Last, but not least, is Independence Pass. This dramatic road, which is south of Aspen, is absolutely gorgeous in the fall. It also travels over a 12,095 foot high pass, which has incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

Guanella Pass

The Guanella Pass Scenic Byway is a stunning highway that runs from Grant to Georgetown, Colorado. This amazing route has large patches of Aspen groves, which makes for a beautiful drive. While it is only a short 22 mile trip, it packs in a lot of scenery in those miles. You’ll pass two Colorado 14ers, Mount Bierstadt and Mt. Blue Sky, many alpine lakes, and also endless golden toned Aspens.

You can start this drive in either Grant or Georgetown. Luckily, the entire road is paved, so it’s not necessary to have a 4WD car. Last, but not least, is the picturesque town of Cuchara and Cuchara Pass. Without a doubt, this tiny town is one of the most charming in Colorado. Plan to spend a relaxing weekend in the area and explore the foliage along the Cuchara Pass and local trails. Additionally, it is located in a quieter area of the state, so you won’t find any crowds here during the fall.

Cuchara Pass is found along the scenic Highway of Legends, a very underrated drive in this state. Spend a couple of hours driving along this route to enjoy the large groves of Aspen trees, many of which are found right off the highway. Be sure to also check out the Bear & Blue Lakes area and the John Farley Wildflower Overlook.
