Colorado has over 30 incredible ski areas, each with their own unique atmosphere. Many of these are located within a 2 hour drive of Denver. However, it can be difficult choosing where to go with so many options. We have been lucky enough to ski at the majority of Colorado resorts (and even worked at Aspen), so we certainly have our favorites. However, if you are coming from Denver, we think that Loveland is the best. Here is our guide to the best skiing near Denver – Loveland Ski Area.

WHY LOVELAND?
The Location
Just 53 miles west of Denver, it’s the closest and easiest resort to visit. It’s no secret that winter traffic can be a nightmare coming from Denver, especially on weekends. However, Loveland seems to avoid most of this since it is located before the Eisenhower tunnel. Most days the drive up there takes less than an hour.
If you don’t have a car and are coming from Denver, you can use public transportation to get here! The Snowstang bus leaves from Union Station and takes you directly to the resort. Check out the schedule here.
The Cost
Loveland costs less than most other resorts. Day passes for other Colorado mountains (Vail, Breckenridge) can be upwards of $200 during peak season. However, for the 2023 season, a pass is $149 on peak days or only $269 for a 4-pack. There are a few areas in Colorado that have cheaper prices, but they don’t compare in the skiing quality.
The Size/Terrain
Loveland offers an amazing 1,800 skiable acres. There’s a bit of something for everyone here – a great learning area and beginner slopes to more advanced and steep terrain. Loveland even offers free snowcat skiing, which offers beautiful views along a 13,000 foot ridgeline. It also receives more snow than any other resort in this area!
No Crowds!
The crowds here are almost non-existent, which is why you will love it. Compared to the other big names around this area (Breckenridge, Vail and Copper Mountain), you’ll find no lines and open runs. Parking is also always free, easy, and close to the base area. If it is a busier day, you’ll find that the people who come here are generally friendly locals who just love to ski.
WHERE SHOULD I STAY?
Georgetown
While Loveland itself doesn’t offer any lodging, the quaint Georgetown is only 15 minutes away. Georgetown was founded during the days of Colorado’s silver boom and is one of the original mining towns in the state. Most of the buildings are from the 1800s and have a ton of charm.
For lodging, try the comfy Clear Creek Inn. It is centrally located for walking around the town and has a great cozy mountain feel. Pro tip: start your day before you go skiing at Mountain Mama’s Needful Things. This delicious breakfast spot has great cinnamon rolls, coffee and breakfast burritos!
Silverthorne/Dillon
These options are only about a 20 minute drive to Loveland, but they are more in the mountains than Georgetown. Both cities offer many options for lodging, restaurants and other winter activities to do.
Our favorite place to stay in the area is the highly rated PAD. This cool spot has great amenities, a beautiful location and is budget friendly! It offers hostel style rooms, private rooms, and is also dog friendly. There’s even a rooftop hot tub, where you can meet other travelers while gazing out at the mountains around you.
ENJOY LOVELAND!
Skiing is definitely an expensive hobby, so it can seem unattainable for many people. However, it can be done in a more budget friendly way! By staying in cheaper areas and visiting less expensive ski resorts, like Loveland, you can enjoy your experience more. Hope you enjoyed this guide to the best skiing near Denver – Loveland Ski Area!
