Colorado has no shortage of amazing small towns. While many more popular areas (Vail, Breckenridge…) can get quite crowded, there are still areas where you have a quiet getaway. One of these places is the town of Westcliffe. In addition to having one of the most beautiful backdrops in Colorado, Westcliffe also provides a perfect small town atmosphere. Where to Stay in Westcliffe
Camping Options
- Lake Creek Campground – This quiet campground is about 20 minutes north from Westcliffe. There is a paid 11 site campground as well as many dispersed sites here. All spots are first come, first served and there are sites for RVs and tents.
- Alvarado Campground – Also about 20 minutes from Westcliffe, this is a much larger campground than Lake Creek. There are RV and tent sites and clean facilities as well. Additionally, this campground is in a beautiful setting (especially in the fall) and has several hikes that leave from here.
Lodging Options
Since there are only 400 people that live here, Westcliffe has a limited number of rental options. However, the best place to stay is the cozy Courtyard Country Inn. As well as being centrally located in the small town, it also has charming rooms and a flower filled courtyard in the summer.
What to Do in Westcliffe
Hike
- Crystal Falls via the Rainbow Trail – This moderate 6.4 mile hike has lovely views of the Wet Mountain Valley below. From Westcliffe, it’s about a 30 minute drive to the trailhead.
- Balman Reservoir Loop – This loop hike is located near Lake Creek campground, so it’s a beautiful option if you are staying there. It’s 4.3 miles with 1,000 ft of elevation gain, but the reservoir and wildflowers are awesome here.
- Venable Creek Trail – This trail is a bit more challenging than the 2 mentioned above, however, it’s probably the most beautiful. It’s about 9 miles out & back with nearly 3,000 feet of elevation gain. You’ll end at a gorgeous alpine lake with views of the peaks surrounding you. Additionally, this trail leaves from the Alvarado Campground area.
Stargaze
Westcliffe is officially recognized as an International Dark Sky Community. This means the city, as well as the residents, has to comply with lighting curfews and regulations. So, be sure to venture outside when you are stay here to stargaze. There is nothing quite like seeing the Milky Way at night without city light pollution.
Explore the Downtown Area
Stroll around the charming downtown area. There are several restaurants, shops and even a bowling alley here. The best things to do here include:
- Eating at Chappy’s Woodfired Grill. This lively spot has great grilled food. Be sure to try the Colorado green chili sauce.
- Having a picnic at Bluff and Summit Park, which is located at the end of town. Undoubtedly, the view from here is one of the most stunning in Colorado!
- Last, but not least, try Peregrine Coffee Roasters. This spot has the best coffee in Colorado and also fresh baked pastries. Make sure to try whatever specialty coffee they have, as it is sure to be delicious.
Visit Lake DeWeese
This recreational area is 10 minutes from Westcliffe. You can fish here, paddleboard, kayak, as well as camp in several sites along the shoreline. It’s a beautiful spot for sunset as well!
