Colorado is known for many things: spectacular scenery, incredible wildlife and charming small mountain towns. However, it should also be known for its large amount of beautiful lakes. There are over 4,000 reservoirs and lakes found throughout the state. Each of these offers something unique, from tiny alpine ponds to the largest in the state, the Navajo Reservoir. Clear Lake

Georgetown

This lake is one of several along the beautiful Guanella Pass Scenic Byway. This scenic highway is particularly lovely in the fall, since it is surrounded by groves of Aspen trees. Additionally, it climbs over an 11,670 foot pass, which has incredible views in all directions. After visiting this lake, you can also explore the historical Georgetown, hike Mount Bierstadt (a Colorado 14er) or ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad.

Dillon Reservoir

Dillon

This huge reservoir, which is the 7th largest body of water in Colorado, offers an endless amount of activities. You can camp at one of the several campgrounds along the shoreline, hike on the numerous trails (Sapphire Point Overlook is a favorite) or also see a concert at the famous Dillon Amphitheater.

Additionally, you can kayak, paddle board or rent a boat from the Dillon Marina. There is also a relaxing shoreline near the amphitheater which is great for picnics and lounging.

Crater Lake

Aspen

This lake is accessible through a moderate 3.5 mile out & back hike in the Maroon Bells Wilderness. Also known as the most photographed place in Colorado, you’ll definitely understand why once you visit. The trailhead for this hike is located at the Maroon Bells Scenic Area, which is an accessible area for those who don’t want to hike!

Additional note: this area requires personal vehicle reservations or a bus shuttle for access during the season it is open (May – October). Check out the Aspen Chamber website for more information.

Summit Lake

Idaho Springs

Summit Lake is one of many gorgeous stops along the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway. This scenic drive takes you through 28 miles of winding road to the top of 14,265 foot high Mount Blue Sky. Without a doubt, the views you find at Summit Lake, near the top of the drive, are some of the most unique in Colorado. Besides these incredible views, you may even spot bighorn sheep along the road as well!

Explore the nearby historical downtown of Idaho Springs, which also offers several outdoor activities. You can take a guided rafting trip along the famous Clear Creek Canyon or a guided via ferrata climbing experience on the cliffside of the mountains here.

Big Meadows Reservoir

South Fork

A lovely lake for camping, picnics, kayaking and also fishing. The campground at the edge of the reservoir has over 50 spaces available, which can be reserved ahead of time. Nearby things to do include the fun small towns of South Fork & Creede as well as the Wolf Creek Valley Overlook and Treasure Falls.

Lake Isabel

Rye

This area of Colorado seems to be more green and lush than other regions of the state due to the amount of rainfall that it gets. Stay at the lovely La Vista campground here or in one of the rustic and cozy San Isabel cabins.

In addition to relaxing at the lake, explore the neighboring Bishop’s Castle, a spectacular hand built castle that has been created over the last 60 years. It’s free to visit and open year round. Another hidden gem in this area is the delicious Rye Cafe, which has great pizza!

Turquoise Lake

Leadville

Last, but not least, is the aptly named Turquoise Lake. This lake, also one of the larger on this guide, has some of the bluest water in Colorado. Along with most of the other listed lakes, there is hiking, camping, and also boating opportunities here.

Besides exploring this gorgeous area, be sure to walk around the historical mining town of Leadville. Leadville is the highest incorporated town in Colorado and offers many activities – the Leadville Scenic Railroad, Colorado’s highest peak (Mt. Elbert) and also the Top of the Rockies zipline.
