Without a doubt, the highways in Colorado are some of the most beautiful roads in the United States. I-70, which runs through the middle of the state, is no exception to this. Taking you through the heart of the Rocky Mountains, this 250 mile stretch of highway offers many incredible towns and viewpoints. Here are 5 of the Best Stops Along I-70 in Colorado.

Golden
The first stop on your journey along I-70 is the very quintessential Colorado town of Golden. Located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Golden has a historical western downtown perfect for wandering around. Things to do here include:
- Touring the Coors Brewery
- Driving to the Lookout Mountain and Windy Saddle viewpoints
- Strolling around old towns shops and restaurants
- Renting tubes and floating down Clear Creek (in the summer)
Loveland Pass
While technically not on I-70, you’ll find this stop through a short 15 minute detour. This especially beautiful road takes you to the top of 11,990 foot Loveland Pass, which lies along the Continental Divide. Once at the top of the pass, you can admire the 360 degree views around you or hike further up the nearby mountains. If you are up for the challenge, we recommend the hike to nearby Mount Sniktau.
Dillon Reservoir
Return back to I-70 after your detour to Loveland Pass. From here, you’ll drop down from the mountains into the gorgeous Dillon Reservoir area. There are several small towns located around the reservoir that are wonderful for an overnight stay, which include Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne. Things to do in this area include:
- Walk around the charming downtown area of Frisco
- Explore the unique Dillon Amphitheater and nearby “beach”
- Rent kayaks or SUPs to paddle on the reservoir
- Stay at The Pad, an incredible boutique hostel with an awesome rooftop hot tub
- Lastly, watch the sunset at Sapphire Point Overlook
Glenwood Springs
A Wandering Whittle favorite, this is definitely the most underrated town along I-70. You’ll pass through Glenwood Canyon to get here, which certainly has some of the most dramatic views along this drive. Make sure to spend at least one night here, as this city and area offers a lot to do. What to do here:
- Soak in the luxurious Iron Mountain hot springs or the free Penny Hot Springs
- Hike to the famous Hanging Lake
- Visit the nearby Roaring Fork Valley towns of Aspen, Snowmass, Basalt, and also Carbondale

Colorado National Monument
This often overlooked western part of Colorado is located near Grand Junction. In addition to sweeping views of the desert landscape, this area also has unique geological features. Colorado National Monument is located a bit off I-70, but it’s definitely worth the additional 30 minute drive. Things to do here include:
- Driving the 23 mile scenic Rim Rock Road through the monument
- Hiking the scenic Monument Canyon Loop or Devils Kitchen trails
